There has been a surge in demand for Data Science related jobs as various organisations are adopting latest technologies to analyze data and gain meaningful insights that help them make optimised decisions. Today, Data Science has evolved as a great career option for both freshers as well as professionals.
A few sectors where there is demand for data scientists and engineers are telecom, IT, retail, finance and insurance, manufacturing, gaming, and many more.
According to a study recently conducted by EdTech Company Great Learning, there are nearly 94,000 Data Science jobs vacant in India. Amidst the COVID19 pandemic, the energy around the Data Science domain continues to steadily remain high with India contributing around 9.8% of the total data analytics jobs in August this year compared to 7% in January.
Although there was a decrease in vacancies from almost 1,09,000 in February’20 to 82,500 in May’10, the demand has been quite consistent across main industry sectors. The current demand is vastly dominated by domestic and MNC IT and KPO industries that are opening jobs in large numbers.
The report tracked the job landscape in 2020 along with the COVID 19 impact. It revealed that 2020 is the year when mid and senior level professionals with over seven years of experience are in good demand than 2019 which was dominated by young professionals.
Bengaluru creates the maximum number of analytics jobs (around 23%) in India, followed by NCR/Delhi at approximately 20% and Mumbai at 15%. The BFSI (Banking, Financial Services and Insurance) sector, despite being the largest recruiter of data science talent in the country by providing around 35% of all analytics jobs, the contribution has gradually been going down y-o-y from 41% in 2018 to 35% in August’20.
The study also revealed an interesting fact that the pharma sector has witnessed a growth in the vacancies of analytics jobs at 16.3% (an increase of 3.9% since last year). The main reason for this is the focus on developing medicines and vaccines for the COVID-19.
The 10 organisations with the most number of analytics job openings this year are: Accenture, Capgemini, Infosys, Mphasis, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Tech Mahindra, Dell, IBM India, HCL, and Collabera Technologies.
Data Science Professional Salaries
The study also reported that the average salary for data science professionals is INR 9.5 lakh per annum in 2020 as per the listed job openings. For individuals with more than 10 years of experience, packages range from INR 25 lakh to INR 50 lakh depending on the role and expertise.
